We begrudgingly left our Lake Garda campsite to head to Venice. Before we’d set off on our big trip, we’d only booked three campsites and one ferry, and the Venice site was one of them because we thought it might be busy. We’d toyed with trying to rearrange it, but the weather looked wet in Lake Garda, so we decided to stick with the original plan.
On our way to Venice, we stopped at Verona. Emma had been before many years ago, but remembered very little about her trip and I’d never been. It’s a nice city to wander about, and we saw the coliseum from the outside but the huge queue put us off going in. It also wasn’t that long since we’d visited a similarly intact one in Arle, France so I didn’t feel I was missing out much. We also found a cool bridge that we spent a lot of time admiring — we have no idea what the bridge was for as my Italian is very much at the guessing words that are similar to Spanish stage but it was an impressive nonetheless.
I’d found a lunch option on Happy Cow — Flower Burger — a purveyor of rainbow veggie burgers which we thought was worth a shot. And it was pretty good. I had a purple bun on my burger and it was tasty as well as looking good. Emma’s pink wrap with crunchy burger was ok but the venue was really nice and it’s always good to find a fully vegan restaurant.
After lunch, we set off to a supermarket to get some more food. This time, we’d found Esselunga, the equivalent of Waitrose and it was a cut above for sure! I should point out that although we do love a foreign supermarket, we also have limited fridge space, so do need frequent stops for veg and tofu (or fake meats). And this was a fine supermarket indeed and we found some fancy vegan biscuits that were the vegan version of the seemingly popular Grisbì biscuits. We’re not sure what they were other than a bit hazelnutty maybe and very tasty, but a quick Google search declares them as “exquisite cookies filled with a velvety cream…Grisbì is much more than a biscuit; it is a small jewel of the patisserie world”. See, I said they were fancy.
The rest of our travels to Venice were uneventful, although the last bit of driving to our campsite was a bit busy and involved some chopping and changing roads, and roundabouts before we came to the entrance to the campsite, nestled between two car dealerships! The site was actually very green and quiet, with great facilities but it felt flat. I think because of it’s proximity to Venice, people just stayed a couple of nights to visit Venice and didn’t spend much time on the site.
