Today we left the fantastic Mosel valley and headed for Belgium. On our way out, we stopped at a Rewe supermarket given how amazing it was when we arrived in Germany. This supermarket on the outskirts of Bernkastel-Kues was miserable. It was set over two floors and designed by a man who had never shopped or cooked. There was no logic to the layout at all. Aisles seemed to be of different lengths and flowing in different directions, and finding things was a real chore. The selection also wasn’t great and it was dimly lit. After we finally completed a depressing shop, we fled Germany as quick as we could, aided by the autobahn. The weather was also duff to add to our mood!

However, things soon picked up when we arrived in the Belgium town of Spa in order to go to Thermes de Spa. It’s a spa with indoor and outdoor pools all fed by natural mineral waters. There are also plenty of bubbles, jets and spouts to keep you entertained and a slightly underwhelming sauna/steam room area. We managed to spend nearly three hours there, so it was a very enjoyable way to pass a rainy afternoon.

Afterwards, it was a relatively short drive to our campsite set 17km outside of Liège in the Belgium countryside. One thing we observed about Belgium roads away from the motorways is the terrible road surface. On some of the minor roads, they amusingly just paint coloured shapes across the road, which we could only assume was to distract you from how bad the road was. Another time, we turned into a road that had a permanent warning sign stating the road was degraded. It really was very degraded and poor Bertrude bumped along while we and all our stuff rattled, but we felt the road wasn’t going to get any attention any time soon!

We arrived at our campsite in the rain and were greeted by a very friendly Dutch woman. She told us our pitch and we went and got set up aided by some very nosey free ranging chickens. It was a lovely site, very green and tranquil, and the chickens roaming about just set it off a treat. The facilities weren’t fancy but they were clean and sufficient. The best thing however was the little bar on site serving pizza and Belgium beer. They had a vegan pizza on the menu so all we had to decide on was the beer. I love Belgium beer, so I was happy and Emma loves pizza. Sorted.
