Today I woke up feeling a bit coldy and had stomach ache (which I blamed on the horrible meal!) and the weather wasn’t amazing. We had another wine tasting booked for the afternoon so decided to cycle into Bernkastel-Kuse, the town nearest us, and have a nosey about. The Mosel is fantastic for cycling because they have designated cycle ways all along the edge of the river.
The town was really cute and picturesque, with lots of medieval buildings and winding cobbled streets, but didn’t have much of interest beyond that. So we didn’t stay long but did manage to buy some delicious looking cake in a bakery (thanks Happy Cow for the tip!) before heading back to the van for lunch.
One thing we’ve found in Germany is how good their bread is and you can always order decent bread rolls from the campsite, so our lunches have elevated a bit compared to the lousy baguettes we were getting.
After lunch, we cycled off to the winery in the rain. This winery was about 4.5 km away in the opposite direction to Bernkastel-Kuse, so we got to see more of the Moselle river.
The winery was very different to the one we’d visited yesterday. On the face of it, it was a lot swankier but actually their wines, although still very good, were not in the same class as S.A Prüm’s wines. The tasting room at the Markus Molitor winery was vast, and there were a number of different groups doing tastings. The lady leading our tasting let us pick our route through the wines and then brought us different ones to try. I stayed mostly on the dry side, venturing into off dry before ending on dessert wines, whereas Emma moved quickly from dry to the sweeter Riesling styles before finishing with the dessert wines. It was a really different experience to the previous day but we thoroughly enjoyed the journey through different Riesling styles.
After the tasting, we went to unlock our bikes and discovered Emma had a puncture so we started the long wet walk back. Once we got to the river and less than a couple of kms from the campsite, I cycled off and left Emma to walk the last bit — partly because I was struggling with my cold and partly to get back to the campsite in time to order rolls for our picnic the next day.
Leaving Emma to walk quietly back along the banks of the Moselle river turned out to be a blessing for her because she got to see a beaver swimming in the river.
