Today we spent time around and on Lake Bled. It truly is a stunning setting. The water is a beautiful blue colour, surrounded by high forested mountains, and in the distance you can see the tops of the larger snow topped mountains.

We set off on a cycle to the town of Bled as our campsite is at the opposite end of the lake. There is a walking/cycle way all around the lake so you’re never that far from it. Near the castle, which is perched high up on a cliff above the lake, we parked our bikes and climbed the steep steps up to the castle entrance to get the views, but didn’t really fancy the castle itself as it is too intact for our liking. So we walked back down the steps and spent some time watching some ducklings on the lake before resuming our cycle into Bled.

Bled itself is a nice little town, touristy for sure but not naff. We’d had our eye on a vegan pub for lunch but unfortunately it was shut on Mondays so that scuppered our plans, but there was a poke bowl shop next door, which provided a very good tempeh poke bowl, which we ate by the lake.

After lunch, we cycled on round the lake back towards the campsite and a row boat rental place. As we got in the boat, the owner asked if I knew how to row, which I replied yes sort of (I’d definitely rowed in my teens a couple of times!) so he gave a brief instruction and off we set towards the island. It was lovely to be on the lake itself, the sun was shinning and it was quite hot so it was pretty perfect. We had decided we didn’t really want to go onto the island (you had to pay!) but it was cool to row up to it and then we just pottered around the lake. We swapped so Emma had a turn rowing too and then swapped back, and amazingly neither of us ended up in the water.

We then completed our cycle back to the campsite, having circumnavigated the great lake (it’s about 8 km around).

All in all, we both love Slovenia. I think it’s safe to say it has risen to the top of our favourite countries list.
